Making fun of dads because they are “pretty much just giant children” is soooooooo 2011. Maybe y’all ain’t heard, but dads are getting all sorts of respect lately – not because they’re doing anything different, but because – ugh – who didn’t want to loosen up the grip a little, amirite?
Buzzfeed didn’t get the memo, so they put out an hilarious article titled “24 Reasons Kids Should Never Be Left Alone With Their Dads“. And besides some of the photos being genuinely funny with no real gender-specific blame to lather onto dad, it’s just kind of, well, you know…phoned-in.
But here’s the thing: when you beat dads down over and over and make moms distrustful of them (even in jest), all it makes society say is “don’t leave your kids alone with dad – you KNOW what they do!” And then guess who has to deal with the pressure of raising kids, working, and doing their damn thing? Moms. So lay off, kk?
In light of this, I present to you 24 reasons (plus a bonus, you motherlovers) your kids should be left alone with their dads.
“So my dad says i can’t get my belly pierced.” / “my dad banned me from driving for a week because i almost hit a lady… she wouldn’t move :(“ / “My dad won’t let me call anyone a nazi or a cracker… #damn”.
These, my excellent readers, are just some of the tweets our friends over at Buzzfeed have compiled. As teenagers, most of us might have “been there” but we didn’t have Twitter to prove to the world how much of a douche bag we were. Luckily, these current adolescent 140 character rants will be preserved in internet carbonite.
President Barack Obama commented publicly this morning on the Trayvon Martin shooting case. In very personal terms, Obama spoke about Martin’s parents, and considered how he’d feel in the situation. In what most news outlets are considering the apex of the speech, Obama says that “if I had a son he’d look like Trayvon.”
If you need to catch up on the Trayvon Martin case, you can read a timeline over at ABC. If you want the TL;DR, this is as close as it gets: George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watch “captain”, shot 17 year old Trayvon Martin, and no one’s sure why. In addition, Zimmerman may have made racist remarks, which were captured during a 911 call. The local police flubbed the handling of the case, as local police often do. There have been multiple calls for justice, including a “Million Hoodie March” and a Change.org petition with over 1.5 million signatures.
A father recorded his daughter standing by the exit escalator of Massachusetts’ Copley Place Mall, and sure, there’s nothing terribly special about goodbyes, we want you to watch this video without cracking a smile. Though the video is dated 2009 – it’s just now going viral, so we’re riding the trend-wave.
This should be in our “Around the Internets” section, but due to the fact that it’s more than a quick hit, we’re lacing it up along with the normal stuff.
So, if you’re not up on thangs, Beyoncé Knowles gave birth to her and Jay-Z’s baby, Blue Ivy Carter, on Saturday. Jay-Z can’t be happier. He’d been vocal before, but no one expected more than the couple of lines from “New Day” to be related to the youngling.
