As our definitions of marriage evolve, so do our definitions of parenthood. Many places around the world have precedent for step-parents and adoptive parents gaining full custody and parental rights, but what about gay parents?

A gay dude in Alberta was just confirmed as the legal father of a 10-year old girl – one that he was raising with his ex-partner, the girl’s biological father.

rob portman gay marriage

Republican U.S. Senator Rob Portman, a dude that was firmly opposed to gay marriage, has now reconsidered his stance after learning that his son is gay.

“It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective,” Portman told reporters, “and that’s of a Dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have — to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years.”

Portman is the first Senate Republican to back gay marriage.

minnesote marriage equality rally

If there’s one thing that can make any parents feel equal to each other, it’s having their kids embarrass them in public and cause a standstill in their task-at-hand. This happened to gay dads
Dr. Paul Melchert and James Zimmerman yesterday at a marriage equality rally in Minnesota. Their sons, Emmett and Gabriel turned on the cute, and almost brought Melchart’s speech to an early close.

After seeing the antics, the audience laughed as Melchart introduced his family: “You’ve met Emmett, and his twin brother Gabriel…”

You're Gay & We're Okay

“5 years ago, I was disowned via letter when I came out to my father. This is how hate sounds,” reads the title of RecBarc’s posting on Reddit. Readers get just that – a pencil-written letter from RegBarc’s (James’) dad, where he disowns his son simply for being gay.

This has gone viral, and picked up by news outlets, and even other dad bloggers. It’s such a powerful topic, and everyone’s got an opinion on it, including me. It got me thinking – what would I be writing to my embarrassed son the night that he came out to my wife and I?

Chick-fil-A Flag Raising

I firmly feel that everyone has the right to believe whatever they want.

If you believe that the world was created in 7 days and that the omnipotent creator of the universe allowed his only son to be sacrificed to redeem the sins of humanity, good for you.

If you believe that a pantheon of gods and goddesses directly oversee many aspects of life on earth, such as seasons, tides, weather, the harvest and death, more power to you!

If you believe that the universe was sneezed out of the nostril of a giant space goat, I suppose that’s just as valid as any other theory. I’ll come back to this.

Will Trinkle, Juan Granados and their 2 year old son, Oliver recently got the business-end of Virginia politics when they were denied a family membership to Roanoke Athletic Club based on the fact that their family consists of gay parents.

The couple of eight years sued the Roanoke Athletic Club and its parent company Carilion Clinic, and won! Deets after the hop.

Hey There Virginia Gym Gay Rights

One gym in Virginia is putting its big, straight foot down, and letting two gay dads know that their illegal behavior won’t be tolerated. Qweerty reports that the Roanoke Athletic Club denied the family package that Will Trinkle and Juan Granados applied for – after initially accepting it.

Trinkle, Granados and their 2 year old son, Oliver intended to use the gym like any other family, but soon after their application was accepted, the Trinkle-Granados family (yeah, that’s right, family) received a letter in the mail letting them know that the prior acceptance was “by mistake.” Ya know, because since Virginia doesn’t recognize gay marriage or same-sex civil union, the Trinkle-Granados family isn’t considered…well…a family.

Here. We go. Again.
