Dadvertising: Super Bowl XLVIII Round-Up

Super Bowl XLVIII Round-up

It’s possible that the tears welling up in my eyes during Super Bowl XLVIII’s commercial breaks were from someone cutting onions for game day guacamole. But I think – just maybe – a couple of tear-jerking moments came from dads in commercials.

At a rate of $4.5 million for a 30-second spot, brands had the blink of an eye to impact their captive audience. How’d they fare?

By my watch, the good outweighed the bad.

An Open Letter to My Son About Microsoft Excel

Letter To My Son About Excel

Dear Son,

I know you’re only four, and I know that you can’t read. I know that I haven’t let you on my computer much, and I’m sorry. Because what I’m about to tell you is of utmost importance: it’s high time you learned Microsoft Excel.

A lot of people think that Excel is simply a tool for boring suits to map out data. Well, son, that’s partially true. But Excel is exciting and Excel can be pretty rock and roll if you trust Excel.

I’ve got a book on pivot tables that we can start reading together before bed. It’s not exactly Shel Silversteen, but I do consider it no coincidence that both the cover of The Giving Tree and the Microsoft Excel icon are both resplendently green.

Microsoft Nails “Keep Shopping” Dad Commercial

By  •  News

Let me preface this by saying if you’ve seen our video podcast, you know I’m a mac dad (not a “mac daddy”). I’m also about 2.5 months late on this apparently – since my wife and I have the Tivo‘s and hate watching commercials.

The ‘grocery-store-dad’ caught my eye as I was watching the NFL Wild Card Playoffs between the Giants and Falcons on live TV tonight (go Giants! Get Green Bay even though odds are against you!). Naturally, I haven’t seen this 30 second spot by Microsoft until now.

Hot off the heels of our Dadvertising 2011 recap when it comes to commercials, I normally don’t see a lone dude picking out items in a grocery store without looking like a sheltered animal that’s just been released into wild to fend for himself in a blinding array of whip-pans and dizzying camera angles – I don’t know what commercial I’m referencing but I just naturally assume that there’s a commercial out there just like that. It’s the f*cking truth. Needless to say this one defeated all stereotypes despite how accurate and left me giving a mental “standing-o” at the end of the 30 seconds. It gave me hope, here’s why.

E3 Roundup – What Fathers Should Look Forward To

Well, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, more popularly-known as E3, came to a close yesterday. They’re not letting anyone in anymore – believe us, we tried to get back in and play dumb. Oh, sure – there will still be parties and events around Los Angeles that should torture commuters in the city for another couple of days, but as of tonight, the oasis of games and goodies in the Los Angeles Convention Center will disappear until their release dates.

No doubt, you’ve heard about some great stuff swirling about the game industry. There’s new systems, handhelds, games, apps and services. But as a father, it’s hard to parse through the “important” stuff.

Allow us to cut through the crap for you, and let you know about a couple of things that stood out to us at this year’s E3. We’re by no means telling you about everything. Actually, we’ve only got a small snapshot of E3 for you, but we felt that these are some awesome titles to look out for. Also check our gallery (at the bottom of every page) for screenshots of all the games we mention.
